January 15, 2020 Activities

Can you guess? Short-sleeved weather. Sunny days in full force during those months when the northern areas of the country are shivering. All reasons snowbirds flock to the southwest Florida area. But those are just a few of the reasons- let us share some of the less obvious reasons that snowbirds can’t wait to call southwest Florida their winter home away from home:

1. Variety

There are four counties that border the Gulf Coast and comprise the southwest Florida area: Charlotte, Collier, Lee, and Sarasota. Each one has its own special offerings. Lee County boasts a population of just over 700,000 and is home to more than 50 miles of beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. See our Maps and Destination Guides to familiarize yourself with the area.

WHITE SANDY BEACH ALERT: Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel Island, Boca Grande, and Captiva Island all boast of their white-sand beaches in the area. Let’s not forget Cape Coral, bordered by the Caloosahatchee River, this destination tops the charts as the country’s number one place to retire.

2. Community

For more than 100 years, Southwest Florida has drawn snowbirds. Every year, the population across the entire state jumps by more than five percent as snowbirds arrive. Finding others who engage in a similar lifestyle and have comparable interests is another reason why this region is so popular with retirees.

3. Entertainment

A variety of entertainment is available in Southwest Florida and is limited only by the amount of time you have. Whether you enjoy shopping, indie folk bands, or art festivals, you’ll find plenty to choose from in the area. If you’re a more active person and enjoy the water, San Carlos Bay & Estero offer kayaking, fishing, boating, and paddle-boarding. For the movie buffs, Florida South Western State College – with campuses in Naples, Fort Myers, Bonita Springs and Punta Gorda – offer free screenings of foreign, independent and, documentary films on a regular basis.

The southwest Florida area offers both a vibrant and tranquil environment. Its versatility allows you to create the retirement experience of your dreams! A primary reason why it’s so popular with snowbirds AND locals. Interested in becoming a snowbird yourself? Browse through our Online Travel Guides and start planning today.
